Q2:   What is Pre-surgical Education?
A2:

By educating a patient and their family it can lead to successful outcomes.  There will be a higher likeliness that they will comply with instructions and be pleased with the results.  When a patient has the necessary knowledge, and knows what goals are attainable, then a firm foundation has been laid out for a rewarding effect.

Q3:   the patient and family receive information prior to surgery?
A3:

Yes.  Prior to the surgery, Olympia Personnel patients and their families will meet with a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist or Registered Nurse.  In these close-knit groups, they will be offered any information that they seek on joint replacement: the expectations which may arise during surgery, post-op time at the hospital and the days after they are discharged.  We decide upon reasonable goals with the doctor.  Information is accessible in the Olympia Personnel for Joint Replacement, however there is a possibility for change after conferring with the doctor.

Q4:   Is it possible to have home visit prior to surgery?
A4:

Yes.  It would be optimal if a home visit could be completed before surgery by the Nurse or Physicial Therapist.  A visit could occur a few weeks, or three to four days before surgery.  During the Visit the PT would check the safety of the home, and let the family know if anything could be changed for a safer atmosphere post-op.  The PT will teach patients who use crutches or a walker the exercises that will help in the recovery process once they overcome the ailing post-op days.
